Why we chase soft light

Early alarms and late finishes, and why they're worth it for the pictures.

Fog rolling over a mountain ridge

Ask anyone who’s been on a shoot with us and they’ll tell you: we’re a bit obsessed with light.

Hard light is hard work

Midday sun is harsh. It throws deep shadows under eyes, makes people squint and flattens landscapes. You can work with it, but you’re fighting it the whole time.

Soft light does half the job

Overcast days, open shade, the hour after sunrise and before sunset. Light wraps around faces, colours get richer, and everything looks calmer.

So we plan for it

That’s why we’ll often suggest an early start or a later finish. It’s a small ask that makes a big difference to how the photos feel.
